The Douglas County Animal Control & Shelter provides many services to the county. Animal Control involves the humane capture of loose animals, enforcement of state and county laws pertaining to animals. The shelter provides a safe haven for those animals who no longer have homes such as those that are strays, runaways, and those seized due to inhumane treatment or cruelty investigations. The shelter also provides the necessary veterinary treatments and social interactions to get them on their way to getting a new owner.

If you are aware of a situation involving the abuse or neglect of an animal, or witness a violation of County or State ordinance (i.e. an animal running loose or unregistered/unvaccinated animals) please complete a Voluntary Witness Statement and mail or bring it in to us. We appreciate your help in making us aware of these situations. The staff at the Douglas County Animal Shelter have been licensed by the State of Illinois as Animal Cruelty Investigators, and are actively searching for animal cruelty cases in Douglas County.

Rabies Tags

Rabies tags are not just a requirement–they come with their own benefits!
Dogs sporting collars with tags can be returned to their owners faster, avoiding extra fines and stressful kennel stays at our facility. In addition, if your dog bites another animal or person, they may be eligible for home quarantine instead of coming to us or a veterinarian. Our facility is also run primarily on registration fees–so your tags are helping a stray or homeless pet get the best care we can provide and a new family!

State law requires that all dogs be vaccinated against rabies and registered with the county they live in beginning at 4 months of age. Rabies tags are available at many local vets, however should you need to register directly with us please mail a copy of your rabies certificate along with a check payable to Douglas County Animal Control for the following amount (as applicable):
1-Year Altered: $10
1-Year Unaltered: $20
3-Year Altered: $20
3-Year Unaltered: $50

*          *Seniors (65+) may receive up to 2 altered tags free
